Today we had another Kaitlin health adventure. She was up most of last night complaining that her ear was hurting and then this morning she woke up with another rash, this time all over her legs and instead of looking like welts they looked closer to a poison oak rash (not a possibility). Given that 1) she had an earache anyway and 2) this was the second weird-ass rash in as many days we went ahead and made an appointment to see the doctor.
Naturally since I called the doctor the rashes faded away completely before we even left. I did take pictures though and brought the camera with me so the doctor could at least see that I wasn't making things up. Re: the rashes, the first one was almost definitely an allergic reaction to something, but since it went away so fast it's unlikely we'll ever find out what it was reacting to--and as long as it doesn't recur we have no issue. The other one she said might have been related to a virus, but I can't remember the name of it. Again, as long as it goes away quickly it's not a problem and it might come back a few more times for a while. As far as the ear goes, she has a RAGING infection in her right ear to the point where her ear drum was as red as a fire engine. (The left ear is totally fine.) We have a 'scrip for Amoxicillin for the next five days and she should be right as rain. With luck we'll all sleep better tonight.
So Happy New Year everybody! We're having a couple of neighbors over for pizza and Lego Star Wars. We've got Bailey's, brandy and egg nog, Washington "champagne", and sparkling apple cider. Other folks are bringing chips and dip and sodas, so I think we're good to go.
See you all in 2010. Hopefully it will be a better year than 2009. |

Hello everybody, I hope you had fun over the holidays (which are technically not yet over--though I'm not sure if they end on New Year's or Epiphany). We had a great time over at olmandude's place for Christmas Eve. They had a video game called Rayman (I think) which involved a lot of weird mini games and shooting plungers at bunnies. It was crazy, but a lot of fun. Dinner was great too and I think I managed to pick some decent gifts for them.
Christmas Day had some snags to it as after getting home the night before we all began to notice a slight sore throat. Kaitlin was up a lot of the night crying over it--apparently the kid's Tylenol didn't help. Christmas morning she seemed to be feeling a bit better, though I could tell she was still a little off since she didn't want to eat any of the Pez in her stocking. On the way up to Mom's place she threw up. Just a little, but we could tell she was feeling bad (insisting the whole time that she was Not Sick). When we pulled over to attend to her for that we also discovered that we had a flat tire, so we were definitely going to go the last 20 minutes to Grandma's house instead of turning around and driving the 70 minutes home. It was actually kind of nice holding Kaitlin while Josh put on the spare tire. I can't remember the last time before that when she let me just hold her and she sat still for it. There are plus sides to a sick kid.
Kaitlin puked again after we got to Mom's place, then slept through Christmas dinner, which was probably for the best since there were so many people. She did miss getting to play with her second cousin, Molly, which is too bad because that was the one person she was looking forward to seeing.
I was starting to feel bad by the end of the day--no vomit, thank *deity*--and went to bed early. The day after Christmas I slept. Josh and Kaitlin went with Mom to pick up wine for my cousin's wedding and a bible study came over and I didn't notice any of it. I woke up at 11:30 in the morning, had a bowl of cereal and watched some TV, then slept again from 1-4. It kind of sucks to be sick the day after Christmas, but Mom's place is a very good place to *be* sick for a day. It's big enough that I could sleep upstairs and not even hear Kaitlin playing downstairs and there was an extra person around to help with the kid.
It was a good holiday though. I got to hang out with Mom and watch the Doctor Who Christmas special (legally!) and see a bunch of family. We got sent home with a bunch of leftovers so yet again I have to figure out things to do with a quart of heavy whipping cream and I don't have to cook for a few more days.
And since I'm talking about Kaitlin getting sick, last night we had a weird incident. After her bath she had a weird rash sort of thing. It looked like a bunch of raised welts all over her back, sides and upper arms, with a little on her belly. I think it was an allergic reaction to something, but I have no idea what. She hadn't eaten anything new. She did wear a new shirt, but she took it off around 7:00 and didn't have the rash then. We were still using the same old shampoo and baby wash for her and we still use the sensitive skin laundry detergent that we always have. We called the advice nurse after we gave her some children's antihistamine and they basically said that it sounded like an allergy and unless she developed other symptoms like a fever or breathing problems then she didn't need to come in right away and we should write down everything she eats and touches to try to correlate it with any future outbreaks. It was all gone this morning, so we haven't been to the doctor yet, but the next time she goes in I'll definitely ask about allergy testing, because that was scary. |
